Kerala is renowned as the "Home of Authentic Ayurveda," with a rich tradition of healing that attracts people from around the world. The state boasts one of the largest concentrations of quality treatment centers, offering an extensive range of Ayurvedic methodologies and therapies. Ayurveda contributes significantly to Kerala’s economy, accounting for approximately 25% of the state’s total healthcare revenue.
The state is home to 150 Ayurveda hospitals that have earned accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), reflecting the high standards of care. Additionally, Kerala has 18 specialized medicinal plant nurseries, ensuring a sustainable supply of key herbs for Ayurvedic treatments.
Ayurveda is also a major draw for international tourists, with around 30% of annual foreign visitors to Kerala seeking Ayurvedic treatments, further cementing the state’s global position as a wellness hub. The state’s thriving research and development ecosystem, coupled with a dynamic startup scene, fosters continuous innovation within the Ayurveda sector.
In a bid to further enhance its offerings, Kerala plans to establish the Global Ayurveda Village, a dedicated hub designed to integrate Ayurveda with other medicinal systems and offer value-added services. Kerala’s excellence in Ayurveda was recognized internationally when it was awarded the title of "Best Wellness Destination" at the 2020 World Travel Awards, showcasing its leadership in the global wellness tourism market.
Kerala’s pharmaceutical sector is valued at INR 15,000 crore, contributing 3.5% to India’s overall pharmaceutical market. The state is poised for significant growth, supported by strategic government initiatives such as the establishment of a dedicated Pharma Park in Kakkanad, Kochi. This initiative aims to boost local manufacturing and foster innovation within the pharmaceutical industry
The proposed Pharma Park will house a Generic Drug Manufacturing Unit, further enhancing Kerala’s manufacturing capabilities. The state is already home to major pharmaceutical players such as Sance Laboratories, which has a strong export presence, supplying products to over 50 countries across four continents, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Kerala’s robust academic and research ecosystem provides a solid foundation for the pharmaceutical sector. Prestigious institutions like the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), and the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) contribute to cutting-edge research and development in biotechnology, medical sciences, and healthcare technology. These institutions not only support the local pharmaceutical industry but also position Kerala as a leader in health and biotechnology innovation.
Kerala is rewriting the script of India’s Medical Device innovation narrative, emerging as a powerhouse in life sciences and healthcare. Contributing an impressive 15% to India’s Medical Device Industry, the state is not only setting benchmarks in innovation but also fueling the nation’s growth in research and manufacturing.
Home to a thriving ecosystem of 85 Medical Device companies, Kerala generates an impressive annual revenue of over $1.05 billion (₹9,000 crores). This sector employs approximately 25,000 individuals, cementing its role as a key driver of the state’s socioeconomic progress. Kerala’s innovation landscape is brimming with 357 startups, 5 cutting-edge incubators, 12 research institutions, and 10 dynamic university departments, all converging to redefine the boundaries of health and life sciences. Anchoring this innovation ecosystem is a state-of-the-art life science park and 5 premier hospitals that are championing research-led healthcare.
Kerala’s health innovation story unfolds across pioneering domains. From excelling in Medical-grade Rubber manufacturing to spearheading advancements in Medical Electronics and Assistive Technologies, the state is carving a niche for itself in the global health tech arena.
As Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, Director of RGCB (Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology), aptly puts it, Kerala is breaking new ground in health innovation. The state is home to world-class centers of excellence in microbiome research and nutraceutical development, addressing critical health and nutrition challenges. Kerala is also a trailblazer in the "One Health" initiative, seamlessly integrating human, animal, and environmental health to tackle emerging threats.
Kerala’s coastline isn’t just scenic—it’s a treasure trove for marine resources. The state is leveraging algae for revolutionary Medical and nutritional applications, underscoring its commitment to sustainable development. Through its visionary BioE3 Policy, Kerala is accelerating Bioeconomy, Biotechnology, and Biomanufacturing. The establishment of Biomanufacturing hubs in Kannur, Kochi, and Trivandrum aims to slash import dependency and position Kerala as a self-reliant manufacturing leader.
With an aging population, Kerala is poised to lead the global charge in Assistive Technology manufacturing, addressing the unique needs of senior citizens.
