Kerala is emerging as a leading force in renewable energy, generating 70% of its power through sustainable sources. As one of India’s seven renewable energy-rich states, Kerala produces over 1,000 MW from solar and wind energy, highlighting its commitment to a greener future. The state’s Renewable Energy Policy is instrumental in driving this progress, offering incentives such as preferential tariffs, capital subsidies, and tax exemptions to foster growth in the sector.
Kerala has quickly positioned itself as a prominent renewable energy hub in South India. Through initiatives like solar rooftop programs, small hydro projects, net metering policies, and targeted incentives, the state actively promotes renewable energy adoption across residential, commercial, and institutional sectors. Notably, Cochin International Airport stands as a global symbol of innovation, being the first fully solar-powered airport in the world. Adding to this accomplishment, Kerala recently launched India’s largest floating solar power project in Kayamkulam, in collaboration with Tata Power.
With a vision for a sustainable future, Kerala has set ambitious targets of becoming fully renewable energy-based by 2040 and achieving net carbon neutrality by 2050. These initiatives underscore Kerala’s dedication to pioneering clean energy solutions and supporting India’s renewable energy mission.
Kerala has established itself as a front-runner in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India, boasting a penetration rate of 13.50%—significantly above the national average. With year-on-year EV sales growing by over 13%, Kerala’s commitment to sustainable transportation is evident. The state currently has the third-highest number of EV charging stations in the country, with a network of over 900 stations, making EV adoption more accessible and convenient for residents and businesses alike.
To further support this green transition, Kerala is developing an integrated Electric Manufacturing Park, aimed at fostering local manufacturing and innovation within the EV sector. In recognition of its proactive and progressive approach, Kerala’s Electric Vehicle Policy was awarded the prestigious Skoch Award in 2022, cementing its reputation as a leader in India's journey toward sustainable mobility.
